How to caramelize onions?

It may sound odd but onions are naturally filled with sugar and the process of caramelizing them is really just brining out that sweetness. When slow cooking the onions the natural sugars begin the process of caramelization and create a unique and intense flavor. The trick is in how to caramelize onions so that its amazingly easy.

Now, you might be wondering “What kind of onions to caramelize?”. Yellow onions are best to caramelize due to the sugar content and relative sweetness. When compared to other onions yellow are milder in flavor but produce and very profound caramelized flavor. 

In short the trick to well caramelized onion is time. I recommend for every onion you want to caramelize to add 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp butter. Add more as needed but this will keep them lubricated. Allow them to brown but not burn. Continue to cook over medium low to medium heat. You can also added about 1 tsp of white sugar to help get the caramelization started. Overall the process should take about 1 hour.
